Chevy vs. Ford Rivalry Continues
Drivers in the market for a mid-size, crossover SUV have several choices, including the rivalry between the 2021 Ford Edge vs 2021 Chevy Equinox. Both models have several well-equipped trims as well as affordable trims with fewer options.
After looking at a comparison of the two rival automakers, does Ford have the Edge, or will the Equinox prove to be the topic mid-size SUV choice from one of the Big Three automakers? See for yourself when scheduling a test drive of the 2021 Ford Edge.
More Power and Performance
When it comes to the powertrain and performance, the Ford Edge is dominant. The base trim, the well-equipped SE, comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 250 horsepower from the eight-speed transmission and standard front-wheel drive. As a comparison, the standard Equinox, the LE, comes with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 170 horsepower. For drivers who like a bit more power under the hood, the Edge wins.
Of course, Equinox’s limited horsepower and smaller engine mean the EPA-estimated fuel economy goes in its favor. The Edge gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21/29. The Equinox gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 26/31. The smaller engine delivers better fuel economy on the city streets, while the larger Edge engine doesn’t make much difference on the highway
.
Both Equinox and Edge come standard with front-wheel drive, but both models have an available all-wheel-drive option. Some trims, like the Ford Edge ST, come standard with all-wheel drive.
Massive Infotech Screen
Both vehicles come standard with necessary entertainment and connectivity technology. All 2021 Edge models have Ford’s SYNC 4A along with a massive 12.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Edge also comes with a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The Ford Edge outdoes Equinox when it comes to infotainment tech, too. Chevy includes a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen, with an available 8.0-inch upgrade, with the Chevy MyLink system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has Bluetooth, USB ports, and Wi-Fi.
Drivers who like the largest touchscreen will appreciate the 12.0-inch model on the Ford. Other than the screen size, the two vehicles have several similar features. The top Ford trim, the Titanium, comes with an exceptionally sounding Bang & Olufsen sound system. On Equinox, the upgraded Bose stereo system is optional.
Similar Standard Safety Features
Ford takes great pride in offering outstanding safety features on all trims. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Edge a five-star safety rating, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the vehicle a Top Safety Pick rating.
The Edge has standard Automated Emergency Braking, Lane-Keep Assist, Blind-Spot Monitoring, and Lane Keep Assist.
The Equinox also earned the five-star rating and Top Safety Pick award from the safety agencies. Chevy loads the Equinox with standard driver-assist features like Automated Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and available Adaptive Cruise Control.
When it comes to safety, both automakers believe drivers, passengers, and pedestrians need all the protection they can get. It’s good to know both models come with a standard collection of safety features because all drivers need to be safe on the roads.

Attractive and Well-Equipped Crossovers
Both models have attractive exterior and interior features. The Edge has a comfortable cabin and a cargo space that can hold up to 29 carry-on bags in 39 cubic-feet. The second row folds flat for added cargo. Flexibility is the name of the game for the Edge.
On the flipside, the Equinox does not have the same flexibility and cargo room. There are several cup holders around the vehicle, but not much cargo space – 30 cubic feet that fits eight carry-on bags.
For comfort, the Equinox offers leather seats as an option. Otherwise, drivers get an easy-to-clean cloth.
Edge drivers can also get leather seats on the ST model. Ford puts cloth and ActiveX on the front and rear seats. With more high-end seating features, the Edge wins this category, too.
The Easy Choice
After a side-by-side comparison of the 2021 Ford Edge vs. 2021 Chevy Equinox, Edge takes the lead. Despite Equinox’s lower price point, the Ford Edge is a better buy. The engine has more power and the seats have more comfort, as the tech has more features.
We invite you to stop by Group 1 Ford of Rivertown to take the Edge for a test drive. We’re confident that you’ll agree that the Edge has an edge over the popular Equinox.
